CCCA's Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Cultural Competence courses are designed as pre-cursors to more in-depth or localised face-to-face training.
Typically, participants entering face-to-face training as a first up option have a low level of knowledge and context that prevents them from effectively engaging with the trainer.
Trainers reported that sessions typically revert to one-way information sessions, whilst organisations reported issues with staff experiencing adverse emotional reactions to sensitive materials such as Stolen Generation stories, as well as barriers going up in more direct ‘guilty, sorry, sad’ approaches to training where employees felt they were under prepared and unable to engage appropriately.
The CCCA curriculums were developed over a period of two years in conjunction with an Indigenous Advisory Panel, the Indigenous Directorate at TAFE, the Indigenous Directorate at the Department of Education and Training and are updated annually.
The online courses allow participants to complete the training in their own time, at their own pace and in a non-confrontational environment. Providing participants with the confidence, knowledge and context to move forward into face-to-face training that ultimate delivers stronger applied outcomes.
CCCA courses deliver real and lasting change through changed attitudes and behaviours, resulting in culturally appropriate and trauma-informed workplaces, employees, policy and program development, and service delivery which in turn improves the lives and outcomes for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples.
